5:07 PM:   Paris Hilton's mom says McCain's ad is a 'complete waste' Hilton and her husband have given McCain's campaign the maximum $4,600 that two can donate. Their daughter Paris and singer Britney Spears are shown in the ad, which questions whether a "celebrity" such as Obama is ready to be president. After its release, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis agreed that the ad's intent was to portray Obama as being like the two young pop stars -- frivolous and irresponsible. USA Today.  
5:06 PM:   Russian author Alexander Solzhenitsyn dies at 89. Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the Nobel Prize-winning Russian author whose books chronicled the horrors of dictator Josef Stalin's slave labor camps, has died of heart failure, his son said Monday. He was 89. AP.
